Indoor pool – new safety regulations do not apply.
Outdoor pool – find a sunny area, avoiding underground services, drains, fosse septiques, power cables and trees. The pool size and distance from any neighbouring boundary normally no closer than three metres. In some areas local churches and monuments may restrict your planning application. All in ground pools are subject to planning approval and the new safety law. Another consideration of the site is the nature of the ground and the risk of a flooding; however, water and electric will be required to maintain and run your pool..
There are many shapes and sizes of pool. The traditional rectangular pool 5 metre by 10 metres, is probably the most popular in France. The size of pool you choose should be tailored to your need e.g. if you require a pool for a gite a 5 by 10 is ideal for up to twenty people. The shallow end may need to suit young children or non-swimmers.
Traditionally pools were built using concrete blocks and cement, this method is very labour intensive. Modern methods and manufacture have made pools more affordable. Today resin polycarbonate panels are positioned and then bolted together, to form the surround of the pool. After this the panels are secured with a concrete foot and then back filled in the normal way. These kits are designed as professional products for the do it yourself installer. With the installation time estimated as 40 hours and some offer a 50 year guarantee. PVC in a variety of colours and patterns are excellent, with a thickness of 0.5mm up to 1.5mm, with a guarantee for ten years. Once a pool liner is beyond repair, the new liner refreshes the appearance of an old pool, for very little cost.
Cartridge filters are similar to large domestic drinking water filters; made of a material membrane which catches the contaminants ( dust, leaves, flies etc ). These are normally located in the skimmer assembly. The cartridges are cleaned by washing, but have a limited life span and need replacing with new.
Sand filters these are vessels full of sand which traps the contaminants. The sand is washed clean normally each week by reversing the water flow on the filter valve, known as back washing. There are different types of sand which can be used in these filters, efficiently removing some minerals and metals from the pool water. They are also compatible with the majority of pool chemicals.
It is important to consider the use of the pool carefully. If this is to be a domestic pool for your own private use, the filtration cycle i.e. volume of pool water cleaned per hour is less than that for a semi-commercial pool such as for a rental property.
